A brake pad is a steel backing plate bonded to a friction material compound. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces your caliper pistons to clamp the pads against the spinning rotor. That friction converts your vehicle's kinetic energy into heat, slowing you down and bringing you to a stop.
The friction material wears down gradually with every stop. Once it wears past a safe minimum thickness, usually around 3mm, your brake pads need to be replaced to keep your full stopping power intact.
Most automotive brake pads include a built-in metal wear indicator that contacts the rotor once the pad wears thin, producing a sharp squeal. Watch for these signs too:
These symptoms can point to worn pads, but they can also signal other brake-system issues, rotors, calipers, or hardware. If you notice any of them, have your brakes inspected rather than diagnosing symptoms alone.
Worn brake pads mean reduced stopping power. In Canadian winter conditions, that margin matters even more, so it's worth staying ahead of it.
Choosing between ceramic and semi-metallic brake pads comes down to how and where you drive. Composition and performance can vary by manufacturer and formulation, but here's the general difference:
Exact composition and performance vary between brands and specific pad lines — check the product specs for the pad you're considering, or ask our team if you're not sure which is right for your build.
Front Brake Pads vs. Rear Brake Pads
Front brake pads generally handle a larger share of your vehicle's total braking force than the rear, which is why they tend to wear out faster. That's why it's common to replace front and rear brake pads on different schedules, check your owner's manual or a technician for the exact interval for your make and model, since this varies by vehicle.
As a general best practice, replace pads as an axle pair, both sides together, rather than just one wheel, to help keep braking force even side to side.
We carry PowerStop and EBC brake pads, giving you options across daily-driver comfort and performance-focused stopping power.
Since pad performance depends on the specific line and compound, use our vehicle selector to find the exact PowerStop or EBC pad built for your year, make, and model.
Brake pad prices vary by vehicle, axle position, and pad material. Semi-metallic and performance-oriented compounds typically cost more than standard ceramic options. Because pricing depends so much on your specific year, make, and model, use our vehicle selector to see current pricing for your vehicle.
All pricing is in CAD. Since MTX Performance ships from within Canada, your order isn't subject to the duty and brokerage fees that can apply to cross-border shipments from some US retailers, so you know the price you see is the price you pay.
How long should brake pads last? Most brake pads last between 40,000 and 70,000 kilometres, though this depends on driving style, vehicle weight, and conditions. Frequent city stop-and-go driving and winter road salt tend to wear pads faster than steady highway driving.
How do you check or inspect brake pads? You can get a general sense of pad condition by looking through your wheel spokes at the pad pressed against the rotor. If the friction material looks very thin or you can't clearly see it at all, that's a sign it may need attention.
This visual check isn't a substitute for a proper inspection, though. A technician can measure pad thickness precisely and check the rest of the brake system during a routine service, which is the reliable way to know for sure.
How do you replace brake pads? Brake pad replacement involves removing the wheel, retracting the caliper piston, and swapping in new pads. But the exact procedure, torque specs, and hardware vary by vehicle, and brakes are a safety-critical system. We recommend following your manufacturer's service procedure or having a qualified technician handle the replacement to make sure it's done correctly for your specific vehicle.
How much does it cost to replace brake pads? Parts cost depends on your vehicle, and the pad brand and material you choose. Semi-metallic and performance compounds typically cost more than standard ceramic.
Labour cost is separate and depends on your shop's rates. Because MTX Performance ships from within Canada, you pay in CAD with no duty or brokerage added to the cost of the parts themselves.
